Giant Mahogany Partners Desk circa 1880s

0uimg 8064Every now and then a majestic piece of furniture wanders into our showroom. Sometimes these pieces sneak in unnoticed and sit in a corner until a sophisticated buyer recognizes the history, the subtle beauty and the value. When this 1880's English born mahogany partner's desk hit our floor, we cleared out a section and placed it where everyone could admire its beauty.

We didn't have a choice in the matter as the desk measures 87" Wide and 54.5" deep. That is a lot of surface area. So much surface space that one could play a fun game of ping pong on it. So we decided to see test our ping pong theory and have a game of ping pong on this fabulous desk. (watch the video of 10 year old Collin taking on his Dad in ping pong).

The green leather has a gold leaf etching around the border and it is in fantastic condition. The ping pong ball bounced with precision off the soft leather which has hardly even a divot in it. uimg 8067When we needed some extra playing space, we propped up the drop leaf on the far side of desk. The traditional use of the desk is for business partners to work across from each other each day and every day. There was no need for texting or cell phones back in the day when this desk was properly employed. communication was direct and constant. Everyone worked in the same office. Now partners work together on different continents, but we still believe the desk has a place in store for it -- somewhere. And when the secretary came in to meet with the partners she would sit at the end of the desk, prop-up the the leaf and take diligent notes.

The desk seems to have all of its original parts, but it is possible that at one point it may have had wooden knobs which might make the desk a little older than we think. The desk is currently priced at $12,000. It is one of a kind and a magnificent piece that can double as a gaming table when partners tire of work. Come check out this fabulous piece of furniture in our Hanover Furniture Consignment Gallery located 20 minutes South of Boston.

Back to School Desks and Bookcases

Posted by Jay Frucci on Sat, August 25, 2012 @ 03: 50 PM

It's that time again! The time when life speeds up, the days get a little shorter and as a result you can't make it to the beach any more.

desks

The result is that the renewed heat and humidity that hit the Northeast this week, doesn't feel as good as it felt when your feet were in the sand a few short weeks ago. But there is good news with this time of the year!

You no longer have to play entertainer to your kids. Our three boys are under the age of twelve and we are desperate to share them with thier friends and teachers once again.

No matter how old your school age children are, there is one commonality. We are ready to begin a new school year no matter how much we will miss the summer.

To get them ready for school, we have desks and bookcases on the 5th floor of our Hanover showroom. We all want our kids to be successful students and no matter their individual scholastic strengths, organization and having a manicured workspace is key to their success.

Finding a desk that is the right height with good surface space is important to helping kids focus quickly and can keep them on task. Messy areas provide distractions for kids. So help them find a desk that allows them to spread out a bit. Proper bookcase storage is just as important to staying organized. Being able to locate books and materials quickly helps kids spend their energy on completing quality work not searching for their resource books. Staying organized and having a functional study area is as important to success in the classroom as having the right technology or a great  teacher.

It is time to get back to school. It is time to get organized. It is time to come check out the desks and bookcases at Furniture Consignment Gallery.

This Tobey Handmade Furniture drop front desk may be a one of a kind piece. Tobey was notorious for designing and producing innovative custom furniture. Tobey handmade furnture employed Gustav Stickley before Stickley became Stickley. The desk is circa 1890 - 1900 and exults some characteristics of the Empire and Victorian styles. The rounded front and the carved accents are very beautiful. It looks like an old piano, but the front folds down and opens into a very functional desk. The desk would function well with a laptop and has lots of drawers and cubby holes to keep things organized. It is solid mahogany and has an incredible front door that is a thick piece of carved mahogany wood.

Tobey Handmade furniture in Chicago made quality hand made furniture from the 1850s to the 1920s. They did a masterful job with drawer construction utilizing tight acute triangular dove tail joints. The details and cravings were done by highly skilled craftsman. This piece is item number 2534-2 in our inventory and is $1,899.

You can find unique and extraordinary pieces like this in our Hanover, MA Furniture Consignment store or our new Furniture Consignment Gallery that serves, Needham, Newton, Wellesley and Brookline.
