Every now and then a majestic piece of furniture wanders into our showroom. Sometimes these pieces sneak in unnoticed and sit in a corner until a sophisticated buyer recognizes the history, the subtle beauty and the value. When this 1880's English born mahogany partner's desk hit our floor, we cleared out a section and placed it where everyone could admire its beauty.
We didn't have a choice in the matter as the desk measures 87" Wide and 54.5" deep. That is a lot of surface area. So much surface space that one could play a fun game of ping pong on it. So we decided to see test our ping pong theory and have a game of ping pong on this fabulous desk. (watch the video of 10 year old Collin taking on his Dad in ping pong).
The green leather has a gold leaf etching around the border and it is in fantastic condition. The ping pong ball bounced with precision off the soft leather which has hardly even a divot in it. When we needed some extra playing space, we propped up the drop leaf on the far side of desk. The traditional use of the desk is for business partners to work across from each other each day and every day. There was no need for texting or cell phones back in the day when this desk was properly employed. communication was direct and constant. Everyone worked in the same office. Now partners work together on different continents, but we still believe the desk has a place in store for it -- somewhere. And when the secretary came in to meet with the partners she would sit at the end of the desk, prop-up the the leaf and take diligent notes.
The desk seems to have all of its original parts, but it is possible that at one point it may have had wooden knobs which might make the desk a little older than we think. The desk is currently priced at $12,000. It is one of a kind and a magnificent piece that can double as a gaming table when partners tire of work. Come check out this fabulous piece of furniture in our Hanover Furniture Consignment Gallery located 20 minutes South of Boston.

Rock maple dressers are our favorite choice for bedrooms for people from ages zero to 100. That's right they are perfect for all ages. For kids rooms, these are a great fit. They are durable, rock solid and can take all of the abuse that you can throw at it. As your kids grow, these pieces can travel with them to their dorm room, to their first house and then onto their kids rooms. These pieces are that tough and they look that good that you will never want to let them go. They are even a perfect fit for senior housing complexes. These chests serve the entire circle of life. They are less money than you can buy a fancy looking chest at the new furniture stores. Solid maple dressers from the 1950s, are better built, still look great and will outlast all of us. We have maple dressers from $350-$700.
She found the chairs in our showroom about a year and a half ago. She bought them immediately and then had them recovered in a nice rose petal fabric.
She ordered the table direct from Eldred Wheeler and 8 months later her perfectly matched, tiger maple double pedestal small dining table finally arrived. After a few months of trying to get used to the gorgeous set, she and her husband could not eat a relaxing meal at the table. Too worried they would harm the table, they just could not enjoy it and decided to sell it for something more low key.
The excellent pricing combined with the immediate satisfaction of being able to avoid the long lead times to have an Eldred Wheeler product made especially for you, makes this set very attractive. The table is priced at $4,800 and the chairs for $4,000.
You can find beautiful hand made, reproduction furniture such as this Eldred Wheeler dining set in our Furniture Consignment Gallery in Hanover, MA and in our newest Furniture Consignment Gallery in Chestnut Hill.
This circa 1990s Hitchcock Black and maple dining set features Hitchcock's classic stencil work and quality construction. The colonial chairs are nearly perfect and will appeal to all of those who have always wanted a Hitchcock set of their own. The black and maple was Hitchcock's most popular color choice and those who have them are clinging onto them so we don't see too many like this on the resale market.
Four poster beds were once a symbol of a man's wealth. Fancy beds and the dressings that cover the canopy and the openings indicated the social status and the financial strength of the man. In today's world, hardly anyone uses the canopy tops anymore, but they are still nice even if the curtain dressings are not utilized.
Four poster beds are readily available for all persons from various econmic backgrounds and so they are no longer a symbol of wealth. However, there are differences in today's four poster beds most of which boil down to personal preference.
Some folks like a bigger, bolder poster that fills the room, while others like a poster that is sleeker and more elegant. Sometimes more is less and somteimes more is, well...more.
We have noticed that homeowners who appreciate color and design work would rather see less of the dark wood so that the eyes focus on beautiful fabrics on window treatments, bed dressings and the wall coverings. While others want to see the wood work.
There is no right or wrong, only personal prefernce. And the great thing about Furniture Consignment Gallery is that we have many wonderful four poster beds to choose from at the moment. We have a nice, bold, turned black King 4 Poster bed or a beautiful Teak, canopy, king bed that has rustic, elegant posters and a canopy top. A larger and more brawny Thomasville 4 poster king bed and a lovely Hickory Chair canopy King four poster bed. There are also two four poster beds in Chestnut Hill one that is a Queen and another that is a King.
With many four poster beds to choose from, this a great time to make a nice addition to you home. All of these beds are of excellent quality and craftsmanship.
Furniture for the everyman. That was once Ethan Allen's motto and then they really tried to accomplish that goal. With great success they were able to offer affordable, good looking quality furniture, to most home owners. Appealing to the masses was the path that Ethan Allen decided to take. Though they were forced to compete with similar styles, quality and prices, Ethan Allen's dirty little secret was that they knew how to make high end furniture.
In fact, Ethan Allen's unassuming nature still has the marketplace underestimating them. Ethan Allen has some great craftsman and they have the "know how" to produce high end furniture. Take for example this demi-lune console that has a variety of inlaid veneer work over solid woods. It is as exemplary as many of the elite brands and it is every bit as authentic and good looking at about half the price. Ethan Allen seems to tease the marketplace when it produces wonderful furniture such as this week's feature piece.
Ethan Allen's current sale price on trhis item is $2,610 and FCG's price for this same item is $1,799 a difference of $800. And there is no wait if you purchase this piece. Just come and get it or opt for our professional delivery service.
You can some of Ethan Allen's highest caliber furniture pre-owned at our Furniture Consignment Gallery in Hanover, MA and our newest Furniture Consignment Gallery in Newton Center, MA.
Chair manufacturing has dramatically changed in the last ten years. Not too long ago, crafting a quality chair was a heavily involved and time consuming process. High end manufacturers still take the time to hand carve and custom construct beautiful chairs, but they are labor intensive with skilled craftsman. The end result is a nice chair with a hefty price tag that will look great for generations. In the modern era of chair construction, engineered woods are machine turned overseas and packed into a kit that is assembled with hex screws in a warehouse. The result is an inexpensive chair with weak construction. When, the screws loosen and an enthusiastic guest rocks slightly back and forth, your guest may find himself planted on the ground with his chair in pieces.
This set of (8) arm chairs by Kimball International are excellent construction built from solid cherry woods. They are hand carved by skilled craftsman and are extremely sturdy. Furniture makers of yesteryear would praise these chairs. They are an excellent price at $899 for the set which converts to $112 per chair. That is a far cry from the hundreds of dollars you would have to pay for a similar styled and constructed chair in today's marketplace.
You can find excellent prices and great deals like these Kimball International chairs in Hanover's Furniture Consignment Gallery or in Boston's Furniture Consignment Gallery located in Newton's Chestnut Hill village.
This table base splits in two to support the ends of the table when it is extended.
